I’m Dawn Straitz, founder of Sort for Joy, and I’ve spent most of my life in the Mid-Atlantic. Originally from Pasadena, Maryland, I completed much of my schooling in Carroll County before attending Salisbury University. After living in Cockeysville and Laurel, MD, I relocated to Virginia in 2006 when I began working in Washington, D.C.—a move that deepened my appreciation for creating calm, supportive spaces amid busy, demanding lives.
Decluttering and organizing—my own space and the spaces of any friends or family who would let me—has been a lifelong passion. Creating order has always helped quiet inner chaos and brought me a sense of clarity, joy, and ease. In 2024, I accepted the invitation to extend this work beyond loved ones and began offering professional decluttering and organizing services in a paid, dedicated capacity.
What sets me apart as a professional organizer is my patience and ability to truly partner with clients. I don’t rush decisions or push rigid rules. Instead, I work alongside people to thoughtfully explore whether their belongings are serving their current life, needs, and values. I am not a minimalist—and I don’t expect my clients to be either. I encourage keeping the clear “yes” items and even the “maybe” items when needed, helping ease fear around letting go and creating enough emotional safety to release what can now serve someone else better.
In these often overwhelming and uncertain times, I feel deeply motivated to support people in changing their relationship with their belongings. When clutter is released with intention and compassion, it creates a ripple effect—bringing more calm, confidence, and presence not only into the home, but into how people show up for themselves and for others.
